The Origin of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day has its roots in the early 1900s during a time when women around the world were fighting for better working conditions, fair pay, and the right to vote.
One of the earliest events took place in 1908, when thousands of women marched in New York demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and voting rights.
In 1910, a German activist named Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an international day dedicated to women’s rights at a conference in Copenhagen. The idea quickly gained support, and the first International Women’s Day was celebrated in 1911 across several European countries.
Over time, the day grew into a global celebration recognising women’s achievements in every part of life — from family and community to business, art, science, and creativity.
Today, International Women’s Day is both a celebration and a reminder of the strength, resilience, and creativity of women everywhere.
