Mother’s Day in the UK: The Meaning, The History & A Gift That Lasts Forever 🌸
Mother’s Day in the UK falls on 15th March this year, and while the cards, chocolates and flowers are beautiful traditions, the meaning behind the day runs much deeper.
At Rockin’ Threads Creations, we believe Mother’s Day isn’t about perfection. It’s about appreciation. It’s about celebrating the women who nurture, guide, support, and love in all the wonderfully unique ways they do.
Let’s explore where Mother’s Day comes from… and why a forever flower might just be the most meaningful gift of all.
The Origin of Mother’s Day in the UK
Mother’s Day in Britain is traditionally known as Mothering Sunday.
Mothering Sunday dates back to the 16th century and was originally linked to the Christian calendar. It was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, when people would return to their “mother church” for a special service. Over time, this day also became an opportunity for families to reunite, particularly for young people working in service who were allowed to return home to visit their mothers.
Across the Atlantic, the modern version of Mother’s Day was shaped by Anna Jarvis in the early 1900s in the United States. Her intention was simple and heartfelt: to honour the sacrifices mothers make for their children.
Eventually, the traditions blended, and today Mother’s Day in the UK is both a celebration of appreciation and a moment to pause and say:
Thank you for everything.
What Mother’s Day Really Means
Mother’s Day isn’t about expensive gifts.
It isn’t about perfect brunches or last-minute petrol station flowers.
It’s about:
Gratitude
Love
Recognition
Thoughtfulness
It’s about choosing something that says:

Why Flowers Became the Symbol of Mother’s Day
Flowers have long symbolised love, gratitude, admiration and remembrance. Each bloom carries its own meaning, from lilies representing devotion to carnations symbolising a mother’s eternal love.
But there’s one problem with fresh flowers…
They fade.
They wilt.
They’re beautiful for a week and then they’re gone.
For a day that celebrates lifelong love, shouldn’t the gift last longer?
A Flower That Never Fades 🌼
At Rockin’ Threads Creations, every flower is handmade with care, intention, and love. What started as a passion for crochet and meaningful gifting has grown into a small business dedicated to creating realistic, forever flowers that don’t wilt.
Each petal is stitched by hand.
Each bouquet is crafted thoughtfully.
Each piece is designed to become a keepsake.
For mums who:
Love home décor
Appreciate craftsmanship
Value sustainability
Prefer meaningful over mass-produced
A crocheted flower is more than a gift.
It’s a reminder — every single day — that she is loved.

A Year of Growth, Grit & Hope at Rockin’ Threads Creations
This year hasn’t been the easiest one for Rockin’ Threads Creations — and that’s something I want to be open about.
Behind the pretty photos and carefully stitched flowers were quiet craft fairs, lower-than-hoped-for sales, and moments of wondering whether I was doing the right thing. Running a small handmade business can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be tough — especially when things don’t go as expected.
There were times this year where it felt heavy. Times where I had to step back, rethink, and learn the hard way. And yes, next year I may be getting a job alongside my business — not because I’m giving up, but because sometimes you do what you need to do to keep going.
And that’s okay.
What This Year Taught Me
Even in a difficult year, there was growth.
I learned:
What truly works and what doesn’t.
How important community and genuine support are.
That handmade still matters, even in quieter seasons.
That resilience is built one small step at a time.
Every slow fair and quiet week came with lessons I’ll be carrying forward.
Still Blooming
Despite everything, Rockin’ Threads Creations is still here.
This year, your favourite crocheted flowers included:
Birth Month Flowers
Sunflowers
Lilies
Delphinium
Gladiolus
Each order, message, and kind word reminded me why I started this journey — to create meaningful, lasting flowers for life’s moments, big and small.
Looking Ahead to 2026
I truly believe 2026 is going to be a better year.
Not a perfect one — but a more focused, sustainable, and thoughtful one. A year where I refine instead of rush, grow at my own pace, and build a business that works with life rather than against it.
Rockin’ Threads Creations isn’t going anywhere. If anything, it’s growing stronger roots.
A Small Thank You: End-of-Year Sale
As a thank you for supporting my small handmade business , especially through a tough year, I’m running an end-of-year sale until 1st January 2026.
If you’ve been thinking about:
Treating yourself to flowers that never fade.
Gifting something meaningful.
Supporting handmade as we head into a new year.
This is a lovely time to do so. 💛
Every order truly helps support this small business as it steps into its next chapter.
Thank you for being part of this journey — the good, the hard, and everything in between.
Here’s to learning, growing, and hopefully sorting out a blooming business in the year ahead 🌸
With love and the best wishes for 2026,
Willeke
